ViennaWiener StaatsoperFounded 1869157+ years of heritage

The Wiener Staatsoper, opened in 1869, stands at the heart of Vienna’s incomparable musical heritage. It is among the most active opera houses in the world, presenting some fifty operas and ballets across more than 300 performances in a single season, with a repertory that changes almost nightly. The house is intimately bound to the Vienna Philharmonic, whose musicians form the opera orchestra, and to a tradition of conducting that runs from Gustav Mahler through Karajan to the present day. Its standing-room tradition keeps great opera accessible to all. The repertoire is dominated by Mozart, Strauss and the German and Italian canon, performed by an international ensemble before audiences for whom opera is woven into the fabric of the city.
