The Tokyo Ballet
東京バレエ団
The Tokyo Ballet, founded in 1964, is Japan’s most internationally renowned ballet company and the first Japanese company invited to perform at the Bolshoi, the Paris Opera and La Scala. It has toured the world more extensively than any other company from Asia. The company is celebrated for the precision and discipline of its dancing and for its long association with leading Western choreographers, most notably Maurice Béjart, whose works it performs with a special authority. Its repertoire balances the classics with a distinguished line of modern creation. From its Tokyo base, the company has been a vital bridge between the European ballet tradition and Japanese artistry, helping to establish Japan as a major force in international ballet.
