Staatsballett Berlin was created in 2004 when the ballet companies of the city’s three opera houses — the Deutsche Oper, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Komische Oper — were merged into a single ensemble. The result is the largest ballet company in Germany. It performs across those houses rather than from one fixed stage, which gives its seasons unusual range: nineteenth-century classics on the grand scale alongside work by contemporary choreographers, reflecting Berlin’s appetite for the experimental. The company draws dancers from around the world and has become a defining part of the city’s dense and famously varied performing-arts landscape.
