Hamburg Ballett
The Hamburg Ballett became one of the most distinctive companies in Europe under John Neumeier, the American-born choreographer who led it for half a century from 1973. Neumeier built an immense body of work — ballets drawn from Bach, Mahler, Shakespeare and Christian liturgy — that gives the company an unmistakable intellectual and emotional signature. Resident at the Hamburg State Opera, the company is celebrated for its evening-length narrative and symphonic ballets, its devoted ensemble, and the annual Hamburg Ballet Days that close each season with a marathon gala. The company’s school and its rich Neumeier repertoire continue to define a tradition of dance theatre in which choreography, music and dramaturgy are inseparable.
