The Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich is one of the foremost opera companies in Europe, with roots reaching back to the seventeenth-century Bavarian court. Its home, the Nationaltheater, witnessed the premieres of several of Richard Wagner’s operas, including "Tristan und Isolde" and "Die Meistersinger". The company is distinguished by its great orchestra, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, one of the oldest in the world, and by a repertoire weighted toward the German tradition of Wagner and Strauss alongside the international canon. Its annual Munich Opera Festival is a highlight of the European summer. The house is also home to the Bayerisches Staatsballett, giving Munich a complete classical performing culture of international standing.
